Sarasota Manatee Internal Awards

Interdisciplinary Research Grant

The USFSM Interdisciplinary Research Grant is designed to leverage the faculty talent across
the USF research enterprise, supporting collaborative research projects that will lead to external funding. Many complex problems in today’s world benefit from analysis from the perspectives of multiple scholarly disciplines. This internal award is poised to support convergent research, leverage lab facilities and other resources available at partner campuses.

Funding for this program comes from an allocation to the USF Sarasota Manatee campus Office of Research. Faculty receiving awards during this cycle may be asked by the Research Advisory Board to contribute to the awards review process in subsequent internal award application cycles.

Goals of this grant program include:

  • Build research capacity on the USF Sarasota Manatee campus.
  • Support collaboration across the university and strengthen synergy in research teams.
  • Support projects that will generate preliminary findings and/or proof of concept to pave
the way for competitive extramural grant support.

Successful proposal teams will include faculty members serving as PIs from different USF
departments, programs, or schools. This program is well-suited to support the endeavors of
faculty with diverse backgrounds and project interests. PIs who accept an Interdisciplinary
Research Grant (IRG) award commit to the pursuit of external funding for the collaborative effort within 18 months of receiving IRG funding. Activities that are not eligible for support through this mechanism include consulting, fundraising, lobbying and curriculum development.

All USF faculty in good standing may participate as PI/Co-PI. All PIs/Co-PIs must be either
tenured/tenure-track, or Center Director. The lead PI for the project must be a faculty member or Director from the USF Sarasota Manatee campus. Faculty serving as peer reviewers are not eligible to apply concurrently for this grant. Adjunct faculty, instructors, affiliate faculty, visiting faculty, and postdocs are not eligible to serve as either PI or co-PIs but may participate as Key Personnel in the proposed project. Late or incomplete applications will be returned without review.

USFSM Summer Faculty Research Award

dedicated time to develop a significant grant (e.g., $250K direct costs) or fellowship application.

The $20,000 Summer Faculty Research Award can be used to support direct costs such a
summer salary, student support, or direct costs to the project. To be considered, submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) single-spaced, 2-pages, via the InfoReady portal https://usf.infoready4.com/.

Applicants must indicate the specific external grant applications for planned grant writing activity for Summer. The intent of this award is to ensure campus researchers have the dedicated time to prepare a highly competitive application. Applications must include the FOA opportunity number and the sponsor’s application deadline. We recognize that agency application deadlines vary.  To fulfill the requirements of this award, grant submissions must be achieved within one (1) year of the award.

This internal funding is intended as a single investigator award. Project teams are encouraged to consider the Interdisciplinary Research Grant.

USF Trailblazer Graduate Research Scholarship

The Trailblazers Research Scholarship is designed for graduate students to gain valuable
training and experience in research through collaboration with a faculty member(s) located on the USF Sarasota Manatee campus. The Trailblazers Research Scholarship program will build confidence, capacity, and readiness for advanced work in conducting original research and contributing to scholarly presentations and publications as a part of a faculty-student team.

Engagement in research is an essential component of the graduate education experience for most programs. Research connects the university with local arts organizations, businesses, civic groups, schools, correctional facilities, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations. The goal of the Trailblazers Research Scholarship Program is to support mentored research experiences for masters and doctoral level students, working with world-renowned faculty researchers in a variety of fields and disciplines available to share their expertise.

Trailblazer Scholars will work closely with faculty mentors, participate in professional development opportunities, and enjoy a rich intellectual and cultural campus life.
Trailblazers Research Scholarship support is a for a one-year appointment. Award amounts may vary and align with the current USF GAU collective bargaining agreement.
Trailblazer Graduate Research Scholarship awards do not come with an other benefits; they are monetary award for 1-year, divided equally between whichever semesters the student will be working on the project (e.g., two payments or three, depending on whether the student works in the summer).

The program invites graduate students from every USF program leading to a master’s or
doctoral degree to apply. The student must propose to work on a research project in
collaboration with at least one faculty member from the USF Sarasota Manatee campus.

The application must be jointly submitted by the student and the faculty mentor(s). The expectation is that faculty mentors and awarded Scholars will pursue other sources of extramural research funding if long-term support is needed.

Eligibility: The Trailblazers Research Scholarship Program is available to all USF students. The program requires the submission of a joint application for a collaborative research project from the student and the USF Sarasota Manatee faculty mentor. Students must be enrolled full-time during each semester for which funding is received and be in good standing. Awards are limited to one Trailblazer Scholar per faculty mentor each year.
