Campus leadership kicked off the month of March with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the beginning of a new era for the Sarasota-Manatee campus as construction of a six-story, 100,000-square-foot student center and residence hall began. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2024, the building will home as many as 200 students. Read on for more news from the Sarasota-Manatee campus, including upcoming events and engagement opportunities.

Groundbreaking
Construction is officially underway for the first-ever student center and residence hall on the University of South Florida’s Sarasota-Manatee campus, launching a new era for USF’s home along Sarasota Bay and the surrounding community.
Inside USF: The Podcast
The latest episode of “Inside USF: The Podcast,” features an interview with University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus Regional Chancellor Karen Holbrook, in which she discusses expansion plans for the campus, including the groundbreaking for the new student center and residential housing complex; and planning for a new Nursing/STEM building.
Women’s Summit
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus and Gulfside Wealth co-hosted the second annual Women’s Summit, featuring a networking breakfast and a slate of panel discussions on March 8 in the Selby Auditorium.
Women’s History Month
Women's History Month is an annual celebration in March that highlights the contributions of women throughout history and contemporary society. The Office of Multicultural Affairs and campus partners host a series of educational and celebratory events throughout the month.
USF Sarasota-Manatee campus to host ‘Ukraine: One Year Later’ lecture series
The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus on March 9 is co-hosting Part 2 of a four-part virtual speaker series, "Ukraine: One Year Later." Entitled “The Tools of War and the Effects of War on Health,” Part 2 will feature military and other experts who will speak about the use of drones, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in warfare. There also will be discussions of the effects of the war on health, and the role of the U.S. military in delivering humanitarian assistance.

In a series of seminars and workshops, University of South Florida faculty are addressing the myriad effects artificial intelligence technologies, such as ChatGPT, will have on research and teaching in higher education.
USF professor enters "Jeopardy!" contestant zone, competes against fellow historians
Jonathan Scott Perry, an associate professor of history at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus, traveled to Los Angeles during winter break to compete in the game show “Jeopardy!”
USF students reduce stigma surrounding mental health through creative expression
Rehearsals are underway for the USF production of This Is My Brave: College Edition. Through creative expression, USF students living with mental illness share their stories on stage in front of the community to break down the stigma surrounding mental health. In conjunction with the stage show, is the integration of the Photovoice exhibit.
College of Education faculty co-author ‘first of its kind’ ESOL textbook
The book will help teachers and school personnel better serve English learners in their classrooms by introducing and reviewing critical concepts through activities that allow readers to apply their knowledge.
TEDxUSFSM — Members of the Sarasota-Manatee community interested in attending TEDxUSFSM 2023 on Thursday, March 30 from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Selby Auditorium are invited to apply before midnight on March 8. Ukraine: One Year Later — The second part in a four-part series titled, "Ukraine: One Year Later," will take place virtually on Thursday, March 9. The event, titled "The Tools of War and the Effects of War on Health," will feature keynote speaker Maj. Gen. David Scott Gray, chair, president and CEO of the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge, as well as panel discussions on drones and emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and health. Register now.
USF Alumni Awards: Call for Nominations — Nominate an extraordinary Bull to receive the university's highest alumni honors at the 2023 USF Alumni Awards. The USF Alumni Awards recognize outstanding alumni and community leaders, including one non-alum, who have made a significant contribution to the university and community. Submit nominations by March 17.
