The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus on March 23-24 is co-hosting Part 3 of a four-part speaker series, "Ukraine: One Year Later," which will focus on the effects of the Ukraine war on global financial, energy, food and other markets.
The program, which will be entirely virtual, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 23 and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on March 24. Attendees can choose between attending both days or just one day.

On March 23, the schedule includes:
- A panel discussion on reactions to the war as felt by world and U.S. bond markets will be moderated by Alison Gardner, senior vice president of Sage Advisors/Mass Mutual. Panelists will be Patricia Healy, senior vice president of research and portfolio manager at Cumberland Advisers; Michael Lee, founder of Michael Lee Strategy; and Peter Tchir, head of macro strategy at Academy Securities.
- A panel discussion on reactions to the war in U.S. and other global stock markets, moderated by Thomas Smith, an associate professor at USF’s Muma College of Business. Panelists will be Doug Ramsey, chief investment officer at The Leuthold Group; Jeremy Schwartz, global chief investment officer at WisdomTree Asset Management; and Todd Engelhardt, regional director of investments at Cumberland Advisers.
- Keynote remarks, entitled “Is Globalization in Retreat? Implications for the U.S. Economy,” by Jay Bryson, managing director and chief economist at Wells Fargo, moderated by Kiyoung Chang, a professor at the Muma College of Business.
- A special report from Elina Ribakova, deputy chief economist at the Institute of International Finance.
- A second keynote, entitled “A Global Perspective,” by William Kennedy, board chair of the Global Interdependence Center and chief investment officer at RiskBridge Advisors. The presentation will be moderated by David Kotok, chairman and chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors and a board member at the Global Interdependence Center.
On March 24, the schedule includes:
- A panel discussion on famine and other food-related issues moderated by William Kennedy, board chair at the Global Interdependence Center and chief investment officer at RiskBridge Advisors. Panelists will be Seth Meyer, chief economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Brandon Zick, chief investment officer at Ceres Partners; and John Newton, chief economist at the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Agriculture.
- A panel discussion on oil and gas issues moderated by Todd Engelhardt, regional director of investments at Cumberland Advisers. Panelists will include Sam Rines, managing director at Corbu LLC; James Slutz, director of study operations at the National Petroleum Council; and Christine Tezak, managing director of research at ClearView Energy Partners.
- A panel discussion on monetary policy during wartime, moderated by Michael McKee, international economics and politics correspondent for Bloomberg Radio/TV. Panelists will be Catherine L. Mann, a member of the monetary policy committee at the Bank of England; and Katarzyna M. Zajdel-Kurowska, former member of the management board at the National Bank of Poland and a fellow at the Global Interdependence Center’s College of Central Bankers.
- A discussion on the impacts of the war on consumer-related businesses by Carlos Herrera, chief economist at Coca-Cola America and David Kotok, chairman and chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors and a board member for the Global Interdependence Center.
The series, which started Feb. 16-17, is a follow-up to last year’s series, “Ukraine: What’s Next?” which was organized shortly after Russia attacked Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
The first part of this year’s series focused on the economic, financial and budgetary impacts of the war. The second part, on March 9, featured discussions on the use of drones, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in warfare, as well as the effects of the war on health and the role of the U.S. military in delivering humanitarian assistance.
The final part, on April 20-21, will focus on cryptocurrencies and the effects of the war on Asia.
The conference series is co-chaired by retired Air Force Maj. Gen. David Scott Gray, president and CEO of the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge; and David Kotok, chairman and chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors and a board member for the Global Interdependence Center.
