TAMPA, Fla. (Feb 15, 2021) – The USF Health College of Nursing announced the launch of a new COVID-focused continuing education series designed to help nurses stay safe while treating patients during the pandemic.
The four-part, on-demand webinar series, “Frontline Nursing During COVID-19: A New Paradigm,” is open for registrants and available to novice and seasoned nurses locally, statewide, and nationally.
The new initiative will help frontline nurses manage the unprecedented challenges they face taking care of COVID patients, including their own mental and physical health.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on our nursing workforce as evidenced by increased suicide rates, burnout and PTSD. As nurses, we spend so much time caring for others, but who cares for us? This program will serve as a critical resource to empower nurses regarding self-care and resilience,” said Usha Menon, PhD, RN, dean of the USF Health College of Nursing and senior associate vice president of USF Health.
The virtual training program is being offered free thanks to a generous $57,000 donation in November 2020 from Sarasota, Florida, philanthropists David Kotok and Christine Schlesinger.
The continuing education program is a self-paced online course. The curriculum is offered on two tracks – one for nurses with less than one year of practice and one for nurses with one year or more of practice. Both tracks will include topics to help frontline nurses understand COVID-19, identify ways to stay healthy during the pandemic and equip nurses with the resources necessary to navigate difficult situations as a result of COVID-19.
Expert presenters represent an interprofessional assembly, including a director of nursing from a COVID-designated hospital in New York, a nurse manager from a Massachusetts hospital COVID unit, an emergency physician and professor from Brown University, a clinical psychologist, a specialist in infection control and epidemiology, and other nurse researchers and nurse academicians.
The continuing education program has been approved by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation for four contact hours.
In addition to the continuing education program, the USF Health College of Nursing started the “Frontline Nursing Podcast” with episodes released each month. These podcasts will keep the learners engaged and informed regarding the state of the science, self-care, and other timely COVID-19 related topics.

“Frontline Nursing During COVID-19: A New Paradigm” is a four-part educational webinar series designed to provide frontline nurses with the tools needed to empower them to advocate for their safety and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series is an innovative program focusing on the safety of nurses and offering professional strategies for self-care and empowerment.
The curriculum was designed by an expert group of interprofessional health care providers, including experienced nurse leaders, educators, practicing nurses, and instructional design professionals. Topics are directly related to empowering nurses to stay healthy and safe while caring for their patients and their community during the global pandemic.
