SARASOTA, Fla. (July 08, 2019) – USF Sarasota-Manatee will host an Accelerated Second Degree (ASD) nursing program information session on Tuesday, July 9, at 6 p.m. in room B226 in the Campus Center, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
The second degree nursing program, offered by the USF College of Nursing at USFSM, is an affordable option for college graduates looking to switch gears and obtain a high-quality bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Through the ASD nursing program, students can obtain a degree within four semesters, including one summer term, and complete all coursework, together with clinical training, at USFSM’s campus and at hospitals in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Creativity & Innovation Summer Camp July 15-19 at USFSM
USF Sarasota-Manatee and the Florida Center for Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching (PAInT) are set to host a Creativity & Innovation Summer Camp July 15-19 at USFSM, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail.
The camp will connect USFSM faculty with local artists and arts organizations to create a week of fun educational activities for rising seventh graders at Booker Middle School in Sarasota.
About 20 seventh graders are expected at the event along with several USFSM faculty and two USFSM students who will assist with camp activities. Each day will present a different activity: “Origami and Math,” “Circus Science,” “Techno-Arts,” “The WILD side of Eco-Arts” and the “Art of Robotics.”
Among the participating artists and arts organizations are the Origami Air Art Studio, the Circus Arts Conservatory, teaching artists Samira Dehghanian and David Skaggs, and Neirda Lafontant, who founded Funducation, which engages children in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) through fun activities.
The artists will be joined by PAInT Director Denise Davis-Cotton, EdD, who is organizing the event, and USFSM professors Su Senapati, PhD; Giti Javidi, PhD; Edie Banner, PhD; and Ehsan Sheybani, PhD.
USFSM student interviewed by German magazine
USF Sarasota-Manatee student Paige Morrison is garnering international attention with an interview she gave to the German magazine A&S International.
The security-themed publication featured Morrison’s comments in an article this past June entitled “Why We Should Put More Energy into Power Plant Security.”
The interview grew out of a recent internship with Washington, D.C.,-based consultant and intelligence advisor Security Management International (SMI).
In addition to interviewing Morrison, a senior interdisciplinary social sciences major, the magazine spoke with SMI Director Luke Bencie. The two discussed the CARVER decision-making system developed by CIA counterterrorism officials in the 1970s. CARVER (Criticality, Accessibility, Recoverability, Vulnerability, Effect and Recognizability) allows security experts to assess risks and vulnerabilities. Bencie discussed other aspects of plant security as well, including how security teams prepare for possible terrorist attacks.
PAInT to host Project WILD/AQUATIC workshop for educators
The Florida Center for Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching (PAInT) will host a day-long workshop for K-12 educators on July 30 entitled Project WILD/AQUATIC.
The workshop, which combines elements of biology and environmental science with the arts, is set to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Selby Auditorium, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
“Arts integration is a diversity of knowledge, programs, experiences and aspirations that bring meaning to ideas and content through human interactions,” said event organizer Denise Davis-Cotton, EdD, director of PAInT.
Davis-Cotton will lead a session on arts integration pedagogy. Assisting her, Edie Banner, PhD, an organic chemistry instructor, will oversee a segment that incorporates art with science and the environment. She’ll rely on a curriculum developed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The workshop will focus on Florida’s wildlife and habitat. Upon completion, teachers will receive a WILD/AQUATIC curriculum and activity guide.

USFSM faculty member Donna Polelle assists aphasia group
Donna Polelle, PhD, an instructor in the communication sciences and disorders program at USFSM, is bringing her extensive administrative and clinical experience to an aphasia awareness organization in Sarasota.
During Aphasia Awareness Month in June, Polelle spoke at an awareness dinner hosted by the Aphasia Community Center in Sarasota.
In addition, Polelle has been involved in the Suncoast Aphasia Support Group for years, assisting individuals with aphasia and introducing student interns to the group to further their education and training.
Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person’s ability to process language, but does not affect intellect. Aphasia is sometimes the result of stroke. The awareness dinner was held on June 8.
