Speaker: Retired Battalion Chief John “Jack” McDonnell
On Sept. 11, 2001, veteran firefighter John “Jack” McDonnell was the Fire Department of New York captain in charge of Ladder Company 24, headquartered near Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan. By the time McDonnell arrived at Ground Zero that day, both 1 World Trade Center and 2 Trade Center had fallen, and he joined in the search and rescue effort at the site.
McDonnell, recipient of the Fire Department of New York’s medal of valor for his response to a fire in 1987, retired as battalion chief for the FDNY. He now resides in Lakewood Ranch.
